Rudolphus Antonius "Roy" Makaay (born March 9, 1975) is a famous Dutch football coach and former player. He was known as a fantastic forward, scoring many goals. People called him "The Phantom" because he could score goals when no one expected it! He was also known as a "goal machine" because he scored so often.
Makaay started his career playing for teams like Vitesse and Tenerife. He then moved to Deportivo de La Coruña in 1999. There, he helped the team win their first ever La Liga title. He also won the Copa del Rey in 2002. The next season, he was the top scorer in Europe, winning the European Golden Boot. He is still the top goal scorer for Deportivo La Coruña.
After that, he joined Bayern Munich for a lot of money. He continued to score many goals there. He won two Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokal cups with Bayern. In 2007, he returned to the Netherlands to play for Feyenoord.
Roy Makaay also played for the Dutch national team from 1996 to 2005. He scored six goals in 43 matches. He played for his country in two UEFA European Championships and the 2008 Olympics.

Club Career Highlights
Roy Makaay was a talented striker from early in his career. He played for Vitesse in the Netherlands. Then, he moved to Spain to play for Tenerife and later Deportivo de La Coruña.
Playing for Deportivo La Coruña
In July 1999, Makaay joined Deportivo de La Coruña. In his very first league game, he scored three goals! This helped Deportivo win 4–1. He scored 22 goals in his first season, helping the club win their first ever La Liga title. This was a huge achievement for the team.
Makaay was part of the team that won the 2002 Copa del Rey Final in 2002. Deportivo beat Real Madrid 2–1 in that final. In the 2002–03 season, he was the top scorer in Europe with 29 goals. This earned him the European Golden Boot award.
He also scored three goals against Bayern Munich in a UEFA Champions League game in 2002. Deportivo won that match 3–2.
Time at Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich was very impressed with Makaay. They signed him in 2003 for a club record fee of €18.75 million. He scored 78 goals in the Bundesliga and 17 goals in the UEFA Champions League during his four years there.
On September 29, 2004, he scored another three goals in a Champions League game. This time it was against Ajax. This made him one of the few players to score a Champions League hat-trick for two different clubs.
Makaay scored Bayern Munich's 3,000th Bundesliga goal on August 21, 2006. He also scored his 100th goal for Bayern Munich on March 31, 2007.
One of his most famous moments was on March 7, 2007. He scored the fastest goal ever in UEFA Champions League history! It took him just 10.12 seconds to score against Real Madrid. This goal helped Bayern win the game and move forward in the competition.
Returning to Feyenoord
In 2007, Makaay moved back to the Netherlands to play for Feyenoord. He signed a three-year deal. He helped Feyenoord win their eleventh KNVB Cup title in his first season. He scored 7 goals in 5 matches during that cup run.
Roy Makaay retired from playing football at the end of the 2009–10 season. In his very last match against Heerenveen, he scored three goals!
International Career
Roy Makaay scored 15 goals for the Dutch U-21 national team. This was a record for a long time.
He played for the senior Dutch national team from 1996 to 2005. He played in Euro 2000 and Euro 2004. In Euro 2004, he scored a goal against Latvia.
In 2008, Makaay was chosen to play for the Netherlands at the Olympics. He was one of the older players allowed to join the team. He was the team captain and led them to the quarter-finals. They were eventually beaten by Argentina, who went on to win the gold medal.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing, Roy Makaay became a coach. He started as a youth coach for the Feyenoord academy. He also worked as a coach for the forwards in both the first team and youth teams.
In May 2013, he became the head coach for Feyenoord's U19 team. Later, he coached the U21 team as well.
In November 2021, he joined Rangers as a first-team coach. In March 2023, he was named head coach of the Bayern Munich World Squad.
