Rudolphus Antonius "Roy" Makaay (born 9 March 1975) is a Dutch football coach and former player. He was a forward, known for scoring many goals. People admired his strong headers and quick moves towards the goal. He could score with either foot!
Roy Makaay started his career playing for Vitesse and Tenerife. In 1999, he joined Deportivo de La Coruña. He helped them win their first La Liga title in his very first season. He also won the Copa del Rey in 2002. The next year, he won the European Golden Boot for scoring 29 goals. He is still the top goal scorer for that club.
Later, he moved to Bayern Munich. There, he got the nicknames Das Phantom (The Phantom) because he could score goals when no one expected it, and Tormaschine (goal machine) for always finding the net. At Bayern, he won two Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokal cups. In 2007, he returned to the Netherlands to play for Feyenoord.
Roy Makaay played for the Dutch national team from 1996 to 2005. He scored six goals in 43 matches. He also played for the Netherlands in two UEFA European Championships and the 2008 Olympics.

Roy Makaay: A Football Star
Early Football Days
Roy Makaay first showed his amazing talent as a striker while playing for Vitesse in the mid-1990s. He then improved his skills in Spain, playing for Tenerife. After that, he joined Deportivo La Coruña.
Scoring Goals in Spain
In July 1999, Makaay joined Deportivo de La Coruña from Tenerife. He played his first league game on 22 August 1999. In that match, he scored three goals, which is called a hat-trick. This helped Deportivo win 4–1 against Alavés.
During the 1999–2000 season, Makaay scored 22 goals in 36 games. He scored two goals in matches against Barcelona, Real Oviedo, and Atlético Madrid. He also scored in their final game against Espanyol. His goals helped the club win their first ever La Liga title!
In 2002, Deportivo reached the 2002 Copa del Rey Final. Roy Makaay was a substitute, but his team won the trophy by beating Real Madrid 2–1.
For the 2002–03 season, Makaay was the top scorer in Europe with 29 goals. This earned him the European Golden Boot award.
He first played against Bayern Munich in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League season. He scored another hat-trick against them in Munich, helping Deportivo win 3–2.
Life at Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich was very impressed with Makaay. In 2003, they signed him for a club record fee. He scored 78 goals in the Bundesliga and 17 goals in the UEFA Champions League during his four years at Bayern.
On 29 September 2004, he scored a hat-trick in a Champions League game against Ajax. This made him one of the few players to score a Champions League hat-trick for two different clubs.
On 21 August 2006, Makaay scored Bayern Munich's 3,000th goal in the Bundesliga. On 31 March 2007, he scored his 100th goal for Bayern Munich.
One of his most famous moments was on 7 March 2007. He scored the fastest goal in Champions League history! It took him just 10.12 seconds to score against Real Madrid. Real Madrid kicked off, but their player Roberto Carlos made a mistake. Bayern's Hasan Salihamidžić took the ball and passed it to Makaay, who easily scored past the goalkeeper Iker Casillas. This goal helped Bayern win and knock Real Madrid out of the competition.
Return to Feyenoord
Roy Makaay went back to the Netherlands for the 2007–08 season. He signed a three-year deal with Feyenoord in June 2007. He decided to leave Bayern because they signed two new forwards, Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose.
In his first season at Feyenoord, Makaay helped the club win their eleventh KNVB Cup title. He scored 7 goals in 5 matches during that cup run.
Makaay retired from playing football at the end of the 2009–10 season. In his very last match, he scored another hat-trick against Heerenveen.
Playing for the Netherlands
Roy Makaay scored 15 goals for the Dutch U-21 national team. This was a record for a long time, shared with Arnold Bruggink. Later, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar broke their record in 2006.
He didn't play as many games for the main Dutch national team because there were other great forwards like Patrick Kluivert, Dennis Bergkamp, and Ruud van Nistelrooy. However, Makaay did play for his country in Euro 2000 and Euro 2004. In Euro 2004, he scored a goal against Latvia.
In 2008, Makaay was one of three older players chosen to represent the Netherlands at the Olympics. He was the team captain. His team reached the quarter-finals but lost to Argentina, who went on to win the tournament.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing football, Roy Makaay became a youth coach for the Feyenoord academy. He also worked as a coach for the forwards, helping both the main team and the youth teams.
In May 2013, Feyenoord announced that Makaay would become the head coach for their U19 team. This was after he had a successful year coaching the C1 team.
On 18 November 2021, he became a first-team coach for Rangers, working with Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
On 23 March 2023, he was named the head coach of the Bayern Munich World Squad.
