Roberto Antonio Pérez Herrera (born March 8, 1956 – died April 8, 2025), known as Rubby Pérez, was a famous singer from the Dominican Republic. He was especially known for his lively merengue songs. Sadly, he passed away during a concert at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo when the roof collapsed.

About Rubby Pérez's Life
Rubby Pérez first dreamed of becoming a baseball player when he was young. However, a car accident caused a permanent injury to his left leg. This led him to change his path and focus on music instead.
He studied music at the National Conservatory in Santo Domingo. After his studies, he joined several school music groups. These included the Choir Youth Guidance Society and The Youth of Bani in 1978. He also performed with Los Hijos del Rey.
Becoming a Merengue Star
From 1982 to 1986, Rubby Pérez was a member of Wilfrido Vargas's orchestra. During this time, he helped make many songs popular. Some of these hits were "El Africano," "Volveré," "Cuando Estés Con Él," and "Cobarde Cobarde."
In 1987, he started his career as a solo artist. This was a big success for him. He released many popular songs like "Buscando Tus Besos," "Dame Veneno," and "Enamorado De Ella." Other well-known songs include "Hazme Olvidarla," "Sobreviviré," and "Tú Vas A Volar." He also had hits like "Hipocresía," "El Perro Ajeno," "Así No Te Amarán Jamás," and "Tonto Corazón."
Awards and Achievements
Rubby Pérez's music also did well on the Billboard charts in the United States. His album Rubby Pérez was on the Tropical list for two weeks. It reached number 15, which was a great achievement. His song "Love Her" also reached number 29 on the Latin Charts.
He won several important awards in his home country. These included the Casandra Awards for "Orchestra of the Year" and "Merengue of the Year." In Venezuela, he received gold and platinum albums in 1988 for his first solo album. He also won Globo awards for Best Song and Album of the Year.
Helping Others
Rubby Pérez was also known for his kindness and willingness to help. He was recognized by the Committee of Latin American Political Parties in the United States (COPOLA USA). This was for his help to the people affected by the big earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010.
