History of Rudolph Town

Early Land Surveys

A part of the town near the Wisconsin River was once called the "Indian strip." The Menominee people sold this land to the U.S. government in 1836. This area was then surveyed and logged early on.

In 1840, a team working for the U.S. government surveyed the southern half of what would become the Town of Rudolph. They walked through the woods and crossed the river. They used tools like a chain and a compass to measure the land.

After their survey, they wrote a description. They noted "considerable good land" in the northeast part. They also mentioned a "Lumbering Establishment" and a possible "Bog iron ore bed" nearby. These were actually on the south side of the river, in an area that later became Biron.

Surveying the Northern Half

In 1851, another team surveyed the northern part of the future town. They described the area as having mostly Maple and Oak trees, with some Pine. They noted that the creeks and streams were fed by swamps. The soil was dark and had a clay layer underneath. They also found a lot of stone, which made farming harder. The land was generally rolling, meaning it had gentle hills.

Founding the Town

The Town of Rudolph was officially created in 1856. It was named after Frederick Rudolph Hecox. He was the first white child born within the town's boundaries.
