The Ruisseau Contourné is a small river, also called a creek. It flows into the Rivière aux Montagnais. This creek is located in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve in Quebec, Canada.
The Ruisseau Contourné flows through two main areas:
- The Lac-Saint-Jean-Est Regional County Municipality in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. This includes the area of Lac-Moncouche.
- The La Côte-de-Beaupré Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region. This includes the area of Lac-Jacques-Cartier.
The main activity in this valley is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Tourism and outdoor fun are also very important here.
The surface of Ruisseau Contourné usually freezes from late November to early April. It is generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to late March.
Where Does It Flow?
The Ruisseau Contourné is surrounded by other important bodies of water. These are called watersheds.
- North side: Huard Lake, Métabetchouane River, and Rivière aux Canots.
- East side: Rivière aux Écorces and Lac aux Écorces.
- South side: Métabetchouane River, Lac aux Montagnais, and Métascouac Lake.
- West side: Métabetchouane River and Métabetchouane Lake.
The Ruisseau Contourné starts at a place called Lac Étoile. This lake is about 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 462 metres (1,516 ft). Lac Étoile has a unique, uneven shape with four bays. The creek begins at the southern end of the lake.
From Lac Étoile, the Ruisseau Contourné flows for about 27.4 kilometres (17.0 mi). It drops about 99 metres (325 ft) in height along its journey.
Here's how the creek flows:
- It goes 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) south to meet the water from Dépatie Lake.
- Then, it continues 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) south, joining water from Louisette and Pinsonneault lakes.
- Finally, it flows 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) south until it reaches its mouth.
After the Ruisseau Contourné joins the Rivière aux Montagnais, the water continues its long journey:
- It flows 9.2 kilometres (5.7 mi) south and then northeast along the Rivière aux Montagnais.
- Then, it travels 5.0 kilometres (3.1 mi) south along the Moncouche River.
- Next, it goes 83.9 kilometres (52.1 mi) north along the Métabetchouane River to the southern shore of Lac Saint-Jean.
- It crosses Lac Saint-Jean for about 22.8 kilometres (14.2 mi) to the northeast.
- Finally, it flows 172.3 kilometres (107.1 mi) east along the Saguenay River through la Petite Décharge to Tadoussac. Here, it mixes with the waters of the Saint Lawrence estuary.
