The Ruisseau du Pied du Mont (which means Pied du Mont stream in English) is a stream in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Rivière des Mares. This stream is entirely within the town of Baie-Saint-Paul. It is located in the Charlevoix Regional County Municipality, which is part of the Capitale-Nationale region.

The area around the stream is used for different activities. The Chemin du Séminaire road crosses the middle part of the stream. Another forest road serves the upper part. The main activity in this valley is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Tourism and recreation are also important here.

The surface of the Pied du Mont stream is usually frozen from early December to early April. It is generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to the end of March. The amount of water in the stream changes with the seasons and how much rain falls. The stream usually floods in April when the snow melts.

Where the Pied du Mont Stream Begins and Ends

The Pied du Mont stream starts from a small, unnamed lake. This lake is about 0.127 kilometres (0.079 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 536 metres (1,759 ft). Tall mountains surround this lake. One mountain peak reaches 1,009 metres (3,310 ft) about 3.8 kilometres (2.4 mi) to the west. Another peak is 1,009 metres (3,310 ft) high, about 2.0 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the southeast.

The source of the stream is located:

  • About 10.6 kilometres (6.6 mi) northeast of the Sainte-Anne River.
  • About 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi) south of where the Pied du Mont stream joins the Mares river.
  • About 10.7 kilometres (6.6 mi) southwest of the mouth of the Rivière des Mares.
  • About 10.8 kilometres (6.7 mi) southwest of the center of Baie-Saint-Paul.

From its source, the Pied du Mont stream flows for 8.4 kilometres (5.2 mi). It drops about 236 metres (774 ft) in height along its path.

The Stream's Journey

The stream's journey can be divided into a few parts:

  • For 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi), it flows north, winding around in some places. It then meets another small stream coming from the southwest.
  • For 0.9 kilometres (0.56 mi), it first flows north across a flat area. Then it turns northwest, winding until it meets the Rivière à Ange coming from the west.
  • For 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi), it flows north, then makes a 0.4 kilometres (0.25 mi) hook towards the southeast before turning north again. It then reaches the Seminary path.
  • For the last 3.0 kilometres (1.9 mi), it flows north. It goes through several rapids and a valley that gets deeper and deeper. Finally, it reaches its mouth.

The Pied du Mont stream flows into the southern bank of the Rivière des Mares in Baie-Saint-Paul.

Where the Stream Joins the Mares River

The mouth of the Pied du Mont stream is located:

  • About 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) north of Chemin du Séminaire.
  • About 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) northwest of the village center of Saint-Placide-Nord.
  • About 10.2 kilometres (6.3 mi) west of downtown Baie-Saint-Paul.
  • About 11.8 kilometres (7.3 mi) northwest of where the Rivière du Gouffre meets the Saint Lawrence River.

From the mouth of the Pied du Mont stream, the water flows for 11.0 kilometres (6.8 mi) along the Mares river. Then, it flows for 7.8 kilometres (4.8 mi) along the Rivière du Gouffre. The Rivière du Gouffre then flows into Baie-Saint-Paul, which is part of the St. Lawrence River.

What's in a Name? The Stream's Toponymy

There is also a club called "Ruisseau du Pied du Mont," number 309, located in the area. Other names that were once used for this stream include Ruisseau de la Mare and Ruisseau des Monts.

The official name "Ruisseau du Pied du Mont" was made official on March 25, 1997. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a place names board in Quebec.
