The Story Behind the Name

Why is it Called Rum Hill?

The name Rum Hill comes from a fun story from the past. Long ago, early settlers and Native Americans had a meeting near this hill. During their discussion, something happened, and a barrel was pushed over the side of the hill. This barrel tumbled down, bouncing from one rocky ledge to another, until it finally broke at the bottom. That's how the hill got its unique name!

Rum Hill's Other Name

During a time in history known as the Prohibition era, Rum Hill was sometimes called Mount Otsego. This was a period when certain goods were not allowed to be sold. For a while, people even thought Rum Hill was the very highest point in Otsego County.
