Ruriko (Rudy) Yoshida is a Japanese-American mathematician and statistician. She studies many different things, from tricky math problems to how to place cameras in sensor networks (like a group of connected devices that collect information). She also studies the family trees of fungi (like mushrooms!). Today, she is a professor of operations research at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. This means she helps solve real-world problems using math and science. She became a full professor on July 1, 2023.

Early Life and Education
Ruriko Yoshida grew up in Japan. She loved mathematics from middle school. However, her teachers told her not to study math. Because of this, she left her Japanese high school. She took an exam to show she had the same knowledge as a high school graduate.
To keep studying math, she moved to the United States. She first went to a junior college. Then, she transferred to the University of California, Berkeley. Her parents had been helping her with money. But they stopped when they found out she was studying math instead of business. Ruriko worked hard to pay for her own schooling. She worked as a grader in the math department. She also worked in the university's police department. She earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics in 2000.
Graduate Studies in Math
After Berkeley, she went to the University of California, Davis for her advanced studies. Her main teacher there was Jesús A. De Loera. She also learned a lot from another professor, Bernd Sturmfels. Part of her work involved counting points inside shapes using a special math method. She finished her doctorate degree in 2004. Her big project was about math functions and how they can be used in different areas.
Career in Mathematics
After getting her doctorate, Ruriko Yoshida went back to the University of California, Berkeley. She worked there as a researcher. Then, she moved to Duke University for more research. She worked with Professor Mark L. Huber.
Becoming a Professor
In 2006, Dr. Yoshida became a professor of statistics at the University of Kentucky. She worked hard and became a tenured associate professor in 2012. This means she had a permanent job there. In 2016, she moved to her current job at the Naval Postgraduate School. She moved to be closer to her husband's family in California. She has also visited Japan to teach at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. She is known as a great teacher of math and statistics.
