Russell A. Anderson (born May 28, 1942 – died September 15, 2020) was an important American lawyer and judge. He held a very high position as the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. This court is the highest court in the state of Minnesota.
Before becoming Chief Justice, he served as an Associate Justice on the same court. He started this role on September 1, 1998. He then became Chief Justice on January 10, 2006. Mr. Anderson retired from the Supreme Court on June 1, 2008, when he was 66 years old. After he retired, Eric J. Magnuson took his place. Russell A. Anderson passed away in September 2020 at the age of 78.
Early Life and Education
Russell A. Anderson was born in 1942. He went to college at St. Olaf College in Northfield. He graduated from there in 1964.
After college, he studied law at the University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis. He earned his first law degree, called a Juris Doctor (J.D.), in 1968. Later, in 1977, he continued his studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.. There, he earned another advanced law degree called a Master of Laws.
Russell Anderson's Legal Career
Russell Anderson's first experience as a lawyer was in the military. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. He was part of the Judge Advocate General's Corps, also known as the J.A.G. Corps. This group provides legal services for the military.
- He worked as a lawyer for both the prosecution and the defense in military court cases.
- He also served as a military judge in some cases.
- He worked as a staff attorney in the Office of Judge Advocate General in Washington, D.C..
After his military service, he worked as a private lawyer in Bemidji from 1976 to 1982. From 1978 to 1982, he was the Beltrami County Attorney. This meant he was the chief prosecutor for Beltrami County.
In 1983, Governor Al Quie appointed him as a judge. He served on the Ninth District Court. Later, in 1998, Governor Arne Carlson appointed him to the state's highest court, the Minnesota Supreme Court.
