Russell Alfred Awkard (born October 7, 1917 – died April 1, 2002) was an American baseball player. He played as an outfielder in the Negro leagues during the 1940s.

Russell Awkard was born in Howard County, Maryland. He began his baseball career playing for a team called the Washington Royals. Later, in 1940, he joined the New York Cubans.
Playing in the Negro Leagues
The Negro leagues were professional baseball leagues in the United States. They were formed when African American players were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball. Russell Awkard played for the New York Cubans in 1940. The next year, in 1941, he played for the Newark Eagles.
Serving His Country
Russell Awkard was also a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army. He was part of the Quartermaster Corps. This group was responsible for providing supplies to soldiers. Awkard served in countries like England, France, and Belgium.
A Special Meeting
In 1993, Russell Awkard was featured in an article. It was in USA Today and was titled "The Name is Awkard, with one W." Before he passed away, Awkard had a special opportunity. He met with former U.S. President Bill Clinton. This meeting included other players from the Negro leagues. It was organized by a person named Bob Hieronimus.
