History of Russellville
Russellville has a long history that started in the early 1800s. A fort was built near an old Native American village called "Little Village." This fort was built by two brothers, Samuel and Jonathan Allison.
How Russellville Got Its Name
Later, in 1835, people planned out a town site. It was named after three other brothers: August, Andrew, and Clement Russell. These brothers provided the wood needed to build the first homes and buildings in the new settlement. Russellville officially became a village in 1875.
Geography of Russellville
Russellville is in the northeastern part of Lawrence County. It sits on the west bank of the Wabash River. This river forms the border between Illinois and Indiana.
Location and Nearby Towns
Illinois Route 33 goes right through the middle of the village. If you go north on Route 33 for about 14 miles, you will reach Palestine. If you head south for about 10 miles, you will find Westport. Westport is just across the river from Vincennes, Indiana.
