Ruth Michele Charney is an American mathematician. She was born in 1950. She is famous for her work in a field called geometric group theory. This area studies shapes and groups of numbers. She also works with Artin groups. These are special kinds of mathematical groups.
Ruth Charney holds a special teaching position at Brandeis University. She was one of the first mathematicians to be named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. She was also among the first Fellows of the Association for Women in Mathematics. She led the Association for Women in Mathematics from 2013 to 2015. She also served as president of the American Mathematical Society from 2021 to 2023.

Her Early Life and Education
Ruth Charney went to Brandeis University for her college studies. She earned her degree in mathematics in 1972. After that, she spent a year studying modern dance. She attended the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio.
In 1977, she earned her Ph.D. from Princeton University. Her main teacher there was Wu-Chung Hsiang.
Her Career in Mathematics
After finishing her Ph.D. at Princeton, Ruth Charney worked at the University of California, Berkeley. She then became a professor at Yale University. Later, she taught at Ohio State University until 2003. In 2003, she returned to teach at Brandeis University.
Leading Women in Math
Ruth Charney was the president of the Association for Women in Mathematics. She held this role from 2013 to 2015. She believed it was very important to help young women in mathematics. She supported summer programs and mentorships. She also encouraged parents to get involved.
She also helped edit a math journal. It was called Algebraic and Geometric Topology. She worked on it from 2000 to 2007.
President of the American Mathematical Society
In 2019, Ruth Charney was chosen to be the president of the American Mathematical Society. She served in this important role from 2021 to 2023. This society is a big group for mathematicians in America. She is now the Immediate Past President of the AMS.
She was also a member of the American Mathematical Society's board. She served on the board from 1992 to 1994.
Awards and Recognitions
- In 2013, Ruth Charney was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. She was part of the very first group to receive this honor.
- In 2017, she was chosen as a Fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics. She was also in the first group to get this award.
