Ryan Malgarini started acting in movies in 2002. His first movie was The United States of Leland. In this film, he played a six-year-old boy in scenes that showed past events.

In 2003, Ryan played Harry Coleman in the popular Disney comedy Freaky Friday. He acted alongside famous stars like Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
In 2004, Ryan worked with Tom Hanks. They made a test film to help create "performance capture" technology. This technology helps turn an actor's movements into computer animation. It was used for the movie The Polar Express.
Ryan also appeared as Benjy in the 2006 movie How to Eat Fried Worms. This film was based on the popular children's book by Thomas Rockwell. He also played the main character, Ugly, in the musical Honk!.
