Story of Freaky Friday
Anna and Tess's Lives
Anna Coleman is a teenage girl who loves music. She plays guitar in a band called Pink Slip. Anna lives with her mom, Tess, and her younger brother, Harry. Tess is a therapist and is getting ready to marry her fiancé, Ryan. Anna isn't very happy about the wedding. Her own father died three years ago, and she misses him.
At school, Anna has a tough time with her English teacher, Mr. Bates. He gives her bad grades no matter how hard she tries. Anna also has a crush on Jake, a boy at school, but her mom doesn't approve. Anna's band has an audition at the House of Blues. But it's on the same night as Tess's wedding rehearsal. So, Tess tells Anna she can't go.
The Magical Fortune Cookie
One evening, Anna and Tess go to Pei-Pei's Chinese restaurant. They get into a big argument there. Pei-Pei's mother steps in and gives them each a fortune cookie. They both read their fortunes out loud. Suddenly, they feel a strange earthquake, but no one else in the restaurant seems to notice.
The next morning, something amazing happens. Anna and Tess wake up in each other's bodies! Now, "Anna" (who is actually Tess in Anna's body) has to go to school. She quickly starts to understand her daughter's problems. She realizes Mr. Bates is picking on Anna because Tess once turned him down for a prom date. "Anna" threatens to tell the school board if he doesn't stop.
Meanwhile, "Tess" (who is Anna in her mom's body) tries to handle her mom's patients. She even gives her new body a cool makeover. Later, "Anna" and "Tess" go back to the Chinese restaurant. Pei-Pei explains that they can only switch back if they show selfless love for each other.
Learning About Each Other
"Tess" goes to Harry's parent-teacher meeting. She reads a paper Harry wrote about how much he looks up to Anna. This makes "Tess" decide to be nicer to her brother. "Anna" tries to fix things with her old friend, Stacey. But Stacey tricks her, and "Anna" gets sent to detention.
Jake sees "Anna" sneaking out of detention and offers to help her finish a test. He takes her to the teachers' lounge. "Anna" realizes Jake is actually a nice guy. But then, she messes with Stacey's test, writing "I'M STUPID!" on it. Jake is not impressed by this.
Ryan surprises "Tess" with a TV interview about her psychology book. "Tess" hasn't read the book, so she talks about getting older in a funny way. "Anna" and Jake watch the interview. "Anna" is embarrassed, but Jake thinks it's cool. "Tess" later meets Jake at his coffee shop job. They connect over their favorite music.
The Wedding Rehearsal and The Switch
At the wedding rehearsal dinner, Anna's bandmates try to get "Anna" to sneak off to the audition. Security catches them. But Ryan surprises everyone by letting "Anna" go. He says he just wants the kids to like him. He also tells "Tess" to go support the band. This finally makes "Tess" like Ryan.
Since "Anna" can't play guitar, "Tess" plays backstage while "Anna" pretends. "Anna" realizes how much fun her daughter's music is. She promises to respect Anna's band more. During the show, Jake is impressed by "Anna's" performance.
Back at the rehearsal dinner, "Anna" tells "Tess" to ask Ryan to delay the wedding. She doesn't want her daughter to marry Ryan while still in her mom's body. Instead, "Tess" makes a toast. She finally accepts Ryan because he makes her mom so happy. This act of selfless love makes Anna and Tess switch back into their own bodies!
Tess and Ryan get married. Anna and Tess finally make up. Anna and Jake start dating, and Tess approves. At the wedding, Pei-Pei sees her mother offering fortune cookies to Anna's grandfather and Harry after they argue. She quickly stops them, making sure no one else switches bodies!

Casting Choices
The movie's producer, Andrew Gunn, first hoped that Jodie Foster would play the mom. Jodie Foster played the daughter in the original 1976 Freaky Friday movie. But she said no. Jamie Lee Curtis got the role of Tess at the last minute. This happened after Annette Bening left the movie just four days before filming began.
Kelly Osbourne was supposed to play Maddie, but she left when her mom got sick. Christina Vidal then took over the role. You might also spot some familiar faces! Marc McClure, who was in the 1976 movie, has a small part as Boris the delivery man. The photos you see at the start of the movie are real pictures of Jamie Lee Curtis and her daughter, Annie Guest. Lindsay Lohan's mom, Dina Lohan, also appears as a wedding guest. Even the director, Mark Waters, has a cameo holding a baby at the wedding!
