Ryan Gregory Mundy (born February 11, 1985) is a former American football player. He played the safety position for eight seasons in the National Football League (NFL). A safety is a defensive player who helps prevent the other team from scoring long touchdowns.

Mundy was chosen by his hometown team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in the 2008 NFL draft. He also played for the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears. During his career, he won Super Bowl XLIII with the Steelers, which is the championship game of the NFL.

High School and College Football

A Star in High School

Mundy grew up near Pittsburgh and went to Woodland Hills High School. In high school, he was a talented player on both offense and defense. He played as a wide receiver (who catches passes) and a defensive back (who defends against passes).

He was so good that he set a school record with 54 touchdown catches. He was named an All-American, which means he was considered one of the best high school players in the country. He also played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, a special game for top high school players.

College Career at Two Schools

Playing for Michigan

In 2003, Mundy started college at the University of Michigan. He played in 11 games as a freshman. The next year, he was a starting player at the free safety position.

In 2005, he had to sit out for a season because of an injury. This is called a "medical redshirt" and it allowed him to heal without losing a year of being able to play. He returned to the team in 2006.

Moving to West Virginia

Mundy graduated from Michigan in 2007 but still had one more year he was allowed to play college football. He decided to transfer to West Virginia University to play for the Mountaineers.

A special NCAA rule let him play right away because he was studying for a master's degree in sports administration, a program Michigan didn't offer.

At West Virginia, Mundy had a great season. He had 45 tackles, three interceptions, and recovered two fumbles. He helped the team win the Big East championship. In his last college game, the Fiesta Bowl, he had a personal best of 11 tackles, helping his team beat Oklahoma.

Professional NFL Career

After college, Mundy prepared for the 2008 NFL draft, where professional teams select new players.

Pittsburgh Steelers (2008–2012)

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Mundy in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. It was special for him to be chosen by the team from his hometown.

He was briefly released but was re-signed to the team's practice squad, a group of players who practice with the team but don't play in games. He later earned a spot on the main team.

In 2010, Mundy and the Steelers played in Super Bowl XLV. Although they lost to the Green Bay Packers, playing in the Super Bowl is a major achievement. In 2012, Mundy was fined by the NFL for a hit against a player that broke a safety rule.

New York Giants (2013)

In 2013, Mundy signed with the New York Giants. During his one season with the team, he made a memorable play. He intercepted a pass and ran it back 91 yards, which was the third-longest interception return in the team's history.

Chicago Bears (2014–2015)

Mundy joined the Chicago Bears in 2014. In a game against the New York Jets, he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.

During the 2014 season, Mundy started all 16 games and had his best year as a pro. He set personal records with 108 tackles and 4 interceptions.

In 2015, Mundy suffered a hip injury during the preseason. The team placed him on the injured reserve list, which meant he could not play for the rest of the season. This was his last season in the NFL.
