Rye's Climate: Weather Patterns
Rye has a special kind of weather called a subtropical highland climate. This type of climate is usually found near oceans. However, Rye has it because it's high up in the mountains. The altitude makes summer temperatures cooler.
Rye gets more rain than very dry places. Also, the average winter temperatures stay above freezing (0°C or 32°F). This unique climate happens because the mountains help create more rain. The high altitude also keeps summers mild.
Even with its special climate, Rye shares many weather features with other parts of Colorado. It's not super wet at any time of year. However, there's more rain in March and April. March also gets the most snow. The snowiest times are November and from January through April.
The North American Monsoon brings a second wet period in June and July. This climate means summers have warm days and cool nights. Winters are chilly and snowy. Winter weather can change a lot. Temperatures in December, January, and February have ranged from very cold (-36°F) to quite warm (76°F).
The hottest temperature ever recorded in Rye was 101°F (38°C) on June 21, 1981. The coldest temperature ever was -36°F (-38°C) on January 12, 1963.
