Early Life and Political Beginnings
Alexey Rykov was born in 1881 in Russia. When he was 17, in 1898, he joined a political group called the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. This party later split into two main groups: the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. Rykov chose to join the Bolsheviks. Because of his political activities, he was arrested many times by the government.
Rise to Power in the Soviet Union
After the February Revolution in 1917, Alexey Rykov returned from Siberia. During the October Revolution of 1917, he was a key member of the Military Revolutionary Committee in Moscow. This committee helped lead the revolution.
After the revolution, Rykov became the Minister of the Interior. This role meant he was in charge of internal affairs. On April 3, 1918, he became the Chairman of the Supreme Council of National Economy. This was a very important job, overseeing the country's economy.
When Vladimir Lenin, the first leader of the Soviet Union, passed away on January 21, 1924, Rykov took over. He became the head of the government for both the USSR and Russia. During this time, he supported Joseph Stalin, who was becoming a powerful figure in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
Later Years and Decline
Alexey Rykov's time as head of government ended in 1929. This happened after he had disagreements with Joseph Stalin. He lost his important position. Later, in 1938, Rykov was arrested and passed away.
