Ryzen ( RY-zən) is a brand of microprocessors made by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). These computer chips are designed for many different types of computers. You can find them in everyday laptops, powerful gaming PCs, and even large computers used for serious work.

What is a Computer Processor?
A computer processor, also called a CPU, is like the brain of a computer. It does all the calculations and follows instructions to make your computer work. When you open an app, play a game, or browse the internet, your CPU is busy making it happen.
How Processors Work
Processors are made of billions of tiny switches called transistors. These switches turn on and off very quickly to process information. The speed at which a processor works is measured in gigahertz (GHz). A higher GHz number usually means the processor can do more work faster.
Cores and Threads
Modern processors like Ryzen have multiple "cores." Think of a core as a mini-brain inside the main processor.
- More cores mean the processor can handle many tasks at the same time.
- For example, a processor with 8 cores can do 8 different things at once.
- Some cores also have "threads," which let each core handle two tasks at once, making the computer even more efficient.
The Story of Ryzen
AMD launched the Ryzen brand in March 2017. Before Ryzen, AMD's processors were not as competitive as those from other companies. Ryzen changed that by offering powerful chips that were also good value. This made AMD a strong competitor in the computer world again.
Zen Architecture
Ryzen processors are built using a special design called "Zen" (and its improved versions like Zen+, Zen 2, and Zen 3). This design helps the processors work very efficiently.
- The Zen architecture allows Ryzen chips to have many cores and threads.
- It also helps them use power wisely, which is important for laptops and powerful desktop computers.
- The "Zen" design has been updated several times to make the chips even faster and more powerful.
Different Types of Ryzen Chips
AMD makes many different Ryzen processors for various needs. They are usually grouped into series:
Ryzen for Everyday Computers
- These chips are great for daily tasks like browsing, school work, and watching videos.
- They balance good performance with an affordable price.
Ryzen for Gaming and Creators
- These are more powerful chips with many cores.
- They are perfect for playing demanding video games or doing creative work like video editing and graphic design.
Ryzen for Super Powerful Computers
- AMD also makes very high-end Ryzen chips called "Ryzen Threadripper."
- These have a huge number of cores, sometimes up to 64!
- They are used in special computers for professional tasks, like making movies, scientific research, or running big servers.
How Ryzen is Made
Ryzen processors are made by companies like TSMC and GlobalFoundries. They use advanced technology to create the tiny parts of the chip.
- The size of the parts is measured in nanometers (nm).
- Smaller nanometer numbers (like 7 nm) mean the parts are incredibly tiny.
- This allows more transistors to fit on a chip, making it more powerful and energy-efficient.
Where Ryzen Connects
Ryzen processors connect to the computer's motherboard using a special slot called a "socket."
- Different Ryzen chips use different sockets, like AM4, TR4, or sTRX4.
- The socket makes sure the processor can talk to all the other parts of the computer.
