A Look at Sábalos History
Sábalos is a rural area located near the coast. It gets its name from a type of fish called the Atlantic tarpon. In Spanish, this fish is known as Sábalo Real.
It is said that Christopher Columbus fished for these tarpon in this area around November 19, 1493. This was during his second trip to the Americas.
Sábalos Becomes Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, showed that 2,365 people lived in the Sábalos barrio at that time.
