The most well-known building in Sääksmäki is its old stone church. This church was built at the end of the 15th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in all of Finland. Inside, you can see special wooden sculptures. An unknown artist, called the "Master of Sääksmäki," made these sculptures. Sääksmäki also has beautiful old manor houses. These large homes are hundreds of years old.

History of Sääksmäki

The name Sääksmäki means "osprey hill." An osprey is a type of bird that catches fish.

Sääksmäki was first mentioned a very long time ago, in 1340. This was in an official letter from Pope Benedict XII. The letter talked about 25 farmers from Sääksmäki. They had not paid their taxes. This old letter helps us learn about Finnish names from that time.

Saarioispuoli Area

There is a southern part of Sääksmäki called Saarioispuoli. It is separated from the main area by a lake called Vanajavesi. This area was connected to Sääksmäki for church matters. But it was managed as its own area, called Saarioinen, since the 1300s.

People from Saarioinen also used to have hunting grounds. These hunting areas were in what is now Central Finland. The first people who settled in places like Jyväskylä came from Saarioinen.

Sääksmäki in Modern Times

Over time, some areas changed. The city of Valkeakoski became separate from Sääksmäki in 1923. Later, in 1973, Sääksmäki joined with Valkeakoski. This means Sääksmäki is now part of Valkeakoski.
