History of Cavese 1919
Early Years and Challenges
The team began in 1919 as Unione Sportiva Cavese. Their very first game was against Salernitana. Cavese, also known as the Aquilotti (Eagle Scouts), won that match 3–2. In 1922, the team joined with another local club, Libertas Sporting Club. This helped them become stronger.
That same year, Cavese was allowed to play in the Prima Divisione. This league was like today's Serie A, the top Italian league. After a few tough years, the team faced problems. Their coach passed away, and they had money troubles. This led to them being moved down a league in 1925.
For ten years, Cavese played in lower divisions. In 1937, they were promoted to the Prima Divisione again. At that time, it was the fourth-highest league. With a new stadium, Stadio Francis Palmentieri, and a star player named Virgilio Levratto, the Aquilotti moved up to Serie C. However, in 1948, money problems hit again. The club went back to the minor leagues.
In 1964, the club worked hard and reached Serie D. This happened even though they had a 3-point penalty. In 1974, Cavese merged with Pro Salerno, another Serie D team. They changed their name to Pro Cavese. After this merger, they returned to Serie C in 1977. In 1980, they went back to their original name.
Reaching Serie B and Big Wins
In 1981, Cavese achieved a big goal. They were promoted to Serie B for the first time. In their first Serie B season, they finished 15th. This was enough to stay in the league. The 1982–83 Serie B season was the best in the club's history. Cavese almost reached Serie A, the top league. They were third at the halfway point of the season. They finished sixth overall.
This season is famous for a huge 2–1 victory. Cavese beat A.C. Milan at their home stadium, San Siro. Joe Jordan scored for Milan. Tivelli and Di Michele scored for Cavese. However, in the next season, Cavese was moved down to Serie C1. They have not been able to reach Serie B since then. In 1991, the team was even removed from Italian football. But they were allowed back into the Eccellenza Campania league. They were then known as S.S. Cavese 1919.
Return to Professional Leagues
In the 2000s, Cavese made its way back to professional Italian leagues. In the 2005–06 Serie C2 season, they won their division. This brought them back to Serie C1. In the 2006–07 Serie C1 season, Cavese finished third. This allowed them to play in the promotion playoffs. They lost 5–2 to Foggia in the first game. In the second game, Cavese almost made a comeback, winning 3–1. But Foggia scored a late goal, and Cavese was eliminated.
In early 2009, Cavese defeated Napoli 2–1 in a friendly match. Starting in 2010, fans of the club could also become shareholders. Michele Angelo Sica, a local photographer, became the executive director. At the end of the 2010–11 Lega Pro Prima Divisione season, Cavese was moved down to Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. In July 2011, the club did not challenge its removal from professional football.
A New Beginning for Cavese
In July 2012, another club, U.S.D. Pro Cavese 1394, made an agreement with S.S. Cavese 1919. This new club would act as a "phoenix club." This means it would carry on the spirit and name of the original club. U.S.D. Pro Cavese 1394 also applied to play in 2012–13 Serie D. Around the 2013–14 season, Pro Cavese changed its name to U.S.D. Cavese 1919. Later, in the late 2010s, it became the current name, Cavese 1919.
In April 2014, U.S.D. Cavese 1919 received a 3-point penalty in the 2013–14 Serie D season. Their Chairman, Salvatore Manna, was banned from football for one year. He resigned from his role that same month. Cavese 1919 was promoted back to Serie C in 2018. The club was chosen to replace teams that could not register for the 2018–19 Serie C season. Cavese had reached the finals of the promotion play-offs in 2017–18 Serie D Group H.
