Santeshivara Lingannaiah Bhyrappa (born 20 August 1931 – passed away 24 September 2025) was a very famous Indian writer. He wrote novels, thought deeply about life (a philosopher), and created stories for movies (a screenwriter). He wrote in the Kannada language. His books are loved by many people, especially in the state of Karnataka. Many consider him one of India's most popular modern novelists.
His stories are special because of their ideas, how they are put together, and their interesting characters. He was one of the best-selling authors in Kannada. His books were also translated into Hindi and Marathi, becoming bestsellers in those languages too. Bhyrappa received many important awards, including the Saraswati Samman in 2010 and the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2015. The Indian government honored him with the Padma Shri in 2016 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023, which are very high civilian awards.

His Early Life and Childhood
S. L. Bhyrappa was born on August 20, 1931. His birthplace was Santeshivara, a small village in the Hassan district of India. This village is about 162 kilometers from Bangalore. He experienced a difficult childhood, losing close family members early in his life. To help pay for his schooling, he took on various small jobs.
During his younger years, he was inspired by the writings of Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar. He started his primary education in the Channarayapatna area. Later, he moved to Mysore to continue his studies. In his autobiography, Bhitti (which means 'Wall'), he shared an interesting part of his life. He once left school for a year with his cousin. During this time, he traveled to Mumbai and even worked as a railway porter. He also spent some months with a group of sadhus (holy people) before returning to Mysore to finish his education.
His Journey in Education
Bhyrappa went to Navodaya High School and Sharada Vilas High School in Mysore. He studied Philosophy at Mysore University, earning both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree. He even received a gold medal for his excellent work in Philosophy. Later, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. His doctoral thesis, titled Satya mattu Soundarya, was written in English and explored ideas of Truth and Beauty.
His Career as a Teacher and Writer
S. L. Bhyrappa had a long career as a teacher. He taught Logic and Psychology at several colleges and universities. These included Sri Kadasiddheshwar College in Hubli, Sardar Patel University in Gujarat, and institutions in Delhi and Mysore. He retired from teaching in 1991. Bhyrappa had two sons and lived with his wife in Mysore. His books were published in English, Kannada, and Sanskrit. They were also used in university courses about Indian and Western Philosophy.
His Amazing Books
S. L. Bhyrappa wrote his first novel, Bheemakaya, in 1958. Over a career that spanned more than five decades, he wrote twenty-four novels. Some of his novels, like Vamshavruksha, Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane, Matadana, and Nayi Neralu, were made into movies. These films were very well-received.
His novel Vamshavruksha won the Kannada Sahitya Academy Award in 1966. Another novel, Daatu (which means 'Crossing Over'), received awards from both the Kannada and Kendra Sahitya Academies in 1975. Parva is one of his most famous novels. It retells the ancient Indian epic of Mahabharata, exploring its stories and characters in a new way.
Tantu, a Kannada novel published in 1993, explored the connections between human feelings. It was translated into English in 2010. After Tantu, he published Saartha in 1998. His work Scion, a beautiful English translation of his Kannada novel Vamshvrishka, was published in 2023.
Why His Books Are So Popular
Many of Bhyrappa's novels were translated into other Indian languages and English. He was one of the best-selling authors in Kannada for over twenty-five years. Translations of his books were also bestsellers in Marathi and Hindi.
Most of his novels were reprinted many times because they were so popular. His novel Aavarana was so eagerly awaited that it sold out even before it was officially released! It set a record in Indian literature, with ten reprints in just five months. His novel Yaana (Journey) was released in August 2014. In 2017, his novel UttaraKaanda, based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, was published. Bhyrappa announced that this would be his last novel due to his advanced age. After a long gap of 62 years, his second novel Belaku Mooditu was published in 2021.
All of his novels were published by Sahitya Bhandara in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
