Sadly, about six months after this rescue, the Stanbrook was sunk by a torpedo in the North Sea by Nazi forces. Captain Archibald Dickson was on board when this happened.

The Stanbrook's Brave Rescue Mission
The Stanbrook was a cargo ship, meaning it usually carried goods, not people. But in 1939, the Spanish Civil War was ending. Many people who had supported the losing side, called Republicans, were in danger. They gathered in the port city of Alicante, hoping to escape.
Why the Rescue Was Needed
The Spanish Civil War was a big conflict in Spain from 1936 to 1939. It was fought between two main groups: the Republicans and the Nationalists. When the war ended, the Nationalist side won. Many Republicans feared for their safety and tried to leave the country. Alicante was one of the last places they could go.
Captain Dickson's Decision
Captain Archibald Dickson was in Alicante with the Stanbrook to pick up a cargo of oranges. He saw thousands of people desperate to escape. Even though his ship was not meant for passengers, he knew he had to help. He decided to let as many people as possible board his ship.
Over 2,600 Lives Saved
On March 28, 1939, the Stanbrook left Alicante. It was packed with over 2,600 people, far more than it was designed to carry. The ship sailed to Oran, a city in Algeria, which was then controlled by France. This journey saved the lives of many families.
The Stanbrook's Final Journey
After its heroic rescue, the Stanbrook continued its work as a merchant ship. However, World War II had begun. Six months after the Alicante rescue, on October 27, 1939, the Stanbrook was sailing in the North Sea. A German submarine attacked it with a torpedo. The ship sank, and Captain Dickson was among those who died.
Legacy of the Stanbrook
The story of the Stanbrook and Captain Dickson is remembered as a powerful example of courage and humanity during a time of war. It shows how one person's brave decision can make a huge difference in saving many lives.
