Archibald Dickson was a brave British sea captain. He was born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1892. He is remembered as a hero for his actions during the Spanish Civil War and the start of World War II. He sadly died at sea in 1939.
A Captain's Brave Actions
Archibald Dickson was the captain of a British merchant ship called the SS Stanbrook. A merchant ship carries goods, but sometimes it can also help people.
The Alicante Rescue
In March 1939, the Spanish Civil War was ending. Many people in Spain needed help. Captain Dickson and his crew sailed the SS Stanbrook to the port of Alicante in Spain. On the night of March 28, 1939, they rescued almost 3,000 Spanish people who were in danger. These people were called Republicans, and they were on one side of the war. Captain Dickson's quick thinking saved many lives.
His Final Voyage
Later that year, World War II began. On November 18, 1939, Captain Dickson was still sailing the SS Stanbrook. His ship was in the North Sea when it was attacked by a German submarine, called a U-boat. The SS Stanbrook was hit by a torpedo, which is a powerful underwater missile. Captain Archibald Dickson died on board his ship during this attack.
Remembering a Hero
Captain Archibald Dickson is remembered for his courage. There are memorials in his honor in the cities of Cardiff (where he was born) and Alicante in Spain (where he performed his famous rescue). His name is also on the Tower Hill Memorial in London, which honors merchant sailors who died in the World Wars.
