He also studied Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Sharia Law in Aït Melloul. He received his bachelor's degree in 1983. In 1987, he earned his master's degree in Islamic law. This was from the Dar El-Hadith El-Hassania Institute.
In 1994, he got a special diploma in medicine. He then started working as a psychiatrist at a hospital in Berrechid. He worked there until 1997. He has written many books about psychology and Islamic law. He also worked as an editor for several magazines.
Political Journey
In 2004, Saadeddine Othmani became the leader of the Justice and Development Party (PJD). This happened after Abdelkrim al-Khatib left politics. At that time, Othmani was also a member of parliament for Inezgane.
Abdelilah Benkirane later took over as party leader in 2008. Othmani became the party leader again in 2017. This was after Benkirane could not form a new government.
Role as Foreign Minister
Othmani served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from January 3, 2012, to October 10, 2013. He was part of the government led by his party, the PJD. Salaheddine Mezouar took over his role as Foreign Minister. After this, Othmani led the PJD group in parliament.
Becoming Prime Minister
On March 17, 2017, King Mohammed VI chose Othmani to be the new Prime Minister. This happened after Benkirane was dismissed. Othmani later said that he did not expect to be chosen for this important role.
On March 25, 2017, he announced the parties that would be part of his government. These included the PJD, the National Rally of Independents, the Popular Movement, the Constitutional Union, the Party of Progress and Socialism, and the Socialist Union of Popular Forces. His government officially started on April 5, 2017.
Key Decisions and Events
Othmani's government was seen as friendly towards France. On November 26, 2017, he announced that four government members were removed from their positions. This was because they did not fully carry out a development plan for the northern Rif region of Morocco. In December 2017, he was chosen as the new leader of the PJD party.
On August 24, 2020, Othmani and his party stated they did not support making relations normal with Israel. They believed this would go against the rights of Palestinians. In 2021, he met with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Rabat. This meeting showed his support for the Palestinian cause.
End of Term
In the legislative elections on September 8, 2021, his party won 13 out of 395 seats. This was a big loss compared to 2016. Othmani also lost his own seat in Mohammedia. Many politicians thought Othmani was responsible for the poor election results.
The next day, Othmani decided to step down as the Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party. On September 10, King Mohammed VI appointed Aziz Akhannouch to form a new government. Akhannouch officially took over as Prime Minister on October 7, 2021. A ceremony for the transfer of office happened the day after.
Life After Politics
After leaving his role as Prime Minister in October 2021, Othmani went back to working as a psychiatrist. He now works at his private practice in Rabat. He also published a book about important Moroccan figures in law and politics.
