Saadeddine Othmani (in Berber: ⵙⴰⵄⴷ ⴷⴷⵉⵏ ⵍⵄⵓⵜⵎⴰⵏⵉ; in Arabic: سعد الدين العثماني; born 16 January 1956) is a Moroccan politician. He served as the 16th Prime Minister of Morocco from 2017 to 2021. Before that, he was the foreign minister from 2012 to 2013.

After the 2011 elections, his party, the PJD, won. He became the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in January 2012. He held this job until October 2013. Since 2002, he has also been part of the advisory council for the Arab Maghreb Union.

Early Life and Education

Saadeddine Othmani was born in 1956 in Inezgane, a town near Agadir in Morocco. His family came from a village called Aguercif. They were known for their knowledge in Islamic law.

In 1976, he finished high school with a math degree. He then moved to Casablanca to study medicine. He earned his PhD in medicine in 1987. He also studied Islamic law and got his master's degree in 1987. In 1994, he started working as a psychiatrist.

Othmani has written many books about psychology and Islamic law. He also worked as an editor for several magazines.

Political Journey

In 2004, Saadeddine Othmani became the leader of the Justice and Development Party (PJD). This happened after the previous leader, Abdelkrim Alkhatib, left politics. At that time, Othmani was also a member of parliament for Inezgane.

Later, Abdelilah Benkirane took over as party leader in 2008. Othmani became the party leader again in 2017. This was after Benkirane could not form a new government.

Serving as Foreign Minister

From January 2012 to October 2013, Othmani was the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He worked in the government led by his own party, the PJD. Salaheddine Mezouar then took over his role. After this, Othmani led the PJD group in parliament.

Becoming Prime Minister

On 17 March 2017, King Mohammed VI chose Othmani to be the new Prime Minister. This decision came after Benkirane was unable to form a government. Othmani later said he did not expect to be chosen for this important role.

On 25 March 2017, Othmani announced the parties that would join his government. These included the PJD, the National Rally of Independents, and several other parties. The new government officially started on 5 April 2017.

In November 2017, Othmani made changes to his government team. He removed four members who he felt were not doing enough to help Morocco's northern Rif region. In December 2017, he was also chosen as the new leader of the PJD party.

Important Decisions and Later Years

In August 2020, Othmani and his party expressed their support for the rights of the Palestinian people. In 2021, he met with a Palestinian leader in Rabat to show his continued support.

In the elections on 8 September 2021, Othmani's party did not win many seats. They won only 13 out of 395 seats, which was a big loss compared to 2016. Othmani also lost his own seat in Mohammedia. Many politicians thought Othmani was responsible for the poor election results.

The next day, Othmani decided to step down as the leader of the Justice and Development Party. On 10 September, Aziz Akhannouch was chosen by King Mohammed VI to form a new government. Akhannouch officially took over as Prime Minister from Othmani on 7 October 2021.

Life After Office

After leaving his role as Prime Minister in October 2021, Saadeddine Othmani went back to his private job. He resumed working as a psychiatrist in Rabat. He also published a book about important Moroccan figures in law and politics.
