Saavedra is a special area in Chile, located in the Cautín Province of the Araucanía Region. It is known as a commune, which is like a local district with its own government. The main town and center of this commune is called Puerto Saavedra.
The commune gets its name from a Chilean soldier, General Cornelio Saavedra Rodríguez. He was in charge of an important historical event in 1860. Saavedra has the highest percentage of Mapuche people in its region. The 1991 movie "La frontera" was also filmed here.
