A Look Back: History of Sabana Grande
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, after a big conflict called the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 1,053 people lived in the Sabana Grande barrio at that time.
