Where is Sabana Yegua?
Sabana Yegua is located about 11 kilometers (about 7 miles) along the highway. This highway connects the cities of Azua and San Juan. The town was not always in this exact spot. It used to be further south, closer to San Juan de la Maguana. You would reach it after passing through a place called El Corozo.
Why Did Sabana Yegua Move?
The town moved to its current location because of a big construction project. A large dam, also named Sabana Yegua, was built on the Yaque del Sur river. This dam was finished earlier than planned. A powerful storm, Hurricane David, arrived on October 31, 1979. It caused the dam to fill up very quickly. Because of this, people had to move out of the old town area quickly.
The Sabana Yegua Dam
The Sabana Yegua Dam is very important for the country. It has a hydroelectric power station. This station creates a large amount of electricity for the Dominican Republic. The dam also helps with farming. It provides about 8 cubic meters of water per second for irrigation. This water has greatly changed the economy of Azua province. Many important farming businesses have started because of this water supply.
What is the Economy Like?
Sabana Yegua has one of the strongest economies in the Azua province. Its economy is mostly based on farming. Farmers here grow many different crops. These include plantains, bananas, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cilantro, and onion. These agricultural products are very important to the region.
