A Look Back at Sabillasville

The first European settlers came to the Sabillasville area in the late 1750s. They were Swiss immigrants. One of the earliest settlers was Peter Zollinger. He owned the land where Sabillasville is today.

In 1813, a man named Andrew Smith planned out the village. He named it Sabillasville to honor Savilla Zollinger, who was Peter Zollinger's wife.

The Railroad and Summer Fun

In 1872, the Western Maryland Railroad reached Sabillasville. This train line connected the area to cities like Baltimore and Hagerstown. Because of the railroad, the area soon became a popular summer resort. This resort was called Pen Mar. The name "Pen Mar" is a mix of "Pennsylvania" and "Maryland," showing that it was close to both states.

Two important old buildings in Sabillasville are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Victor Cullen School Power House, listed in 1987, and the Victor Cullen Center, Old Administration Building, listed in 1990. These buildings are recognized for their historical importance.
