Sachidananda Routray (born May 13, 1916 – died August 21, 2004) was a famous Indian writer. He wrote poems, novels, and short stories in the Odia language. People often called him Biplabi Kabi (which means revolutionary poet) Sachi Routray because his poems often had strong, inspiring messages. He won the Jnanpith Award in 1986, which is the highest award for writers in India.

The Life of Sachi Routray

Sachidananda Routray was born in a place called Gurujang, near Khurda, on May 13, 1916. He grew up and went to school in Bengal. Later, he married a princess from a royal family in Golapalli, who was from the Telugu community.

Routray started writing poems when he was just eleven years old. While he was still in school, he also took part in the movement to free India from British rule. Some of his poems were even banned by the British government because they had strong, revolutionary ideas. He passed away in Cuttack on August 21, 2004.

His Amazing Works

Sachidananda Routray began his writing journey with his first poetry collection, "Patheya," in 1932. In 1943, he became very well-known among Odia readers. This happened when he published Baji Rout. This was a long poem that told the story of a brave boatman boy. The boy was killed by British police because he refused to take them across the Brahmani river in his small boat.

Routray was a very active poet and published about twenty collections of poems. His book Pallishri is very popular. It describes village life in Odisha. Another famous poem, Pratima Nayak, talks about the difficulties and problems faced by a girl living in the city. He was part of a group of writers who called themselves 'poets of the people'. This meant they wrote for and about ordinary people.

Routray also wrote some poems that had religious themes. One of his poems, "Chhota Mora Gan Ti," is now taught by many teachers in Odisha.
