The Sacred Heart Church is a religious building in Koror, Palau. It is a Catholic Church located on the main street of the city. Koror is an island and state in Palau, a country in Oceania. This church follows the Roman or Latin rite of the Catholic Church. It is part of the Diocese of the Caroline Islands. This diocese is based in Weno, which is in the Federated States of Micronesia. The church's history goes back to 1886. It became a full diocese in 1979 under Pope John Paul II.
History of Sacred Heart Church
The current church building has a long history. The first church, also called Sacred Heart, was built in 1892. This was during the time of Spanish colonization. A new and larger church was started in 1935. It took eight years to complete this new building.
Opening of the New Church
The new Sacred Heart Church was officially opened in 1943. Many local church members attended the opening ceremony. Important Japanese authorities were also there. This shows the church's importance to the community.
