Sadashiv Dattaray Amrapurkar (born Ganesh Kumar Narwode, 11 May 1950 – 3 November 2014) was a talented Indian actor. He was well-known for his roles in Marathi and Hindi movies from 1983 to 1999. He acted in over 300 films in various Indian languages. Before becoming a famous actor, he even played first-class cricket in the Ranji trophy, which is a major cricket tournament in India.

Sadashiv Amrapurkar was the first actor to win the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role in 1991 for his movie Sadak. This award was created especially for actors who played villain roles. In 1993, he also played a funny hero, Inspector Pyare Mohan, in the film Aankhen. Besides playing villains, he also took on supporting roles and later, many funny characters.

Early Life and Beginnings

Sadashiv Amrapurkar was born as Ganesh Kumar Narwode on 11 May 1950. His birthplace was Amrapur village in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India.

He started acting when he was still in school. While studying history at Pune University, he became very involved in theatre plays.

Acting Journey

Amrapurkar began his acting career in Marathi theatre. He acted in and directed almost fifty plays before he started working in films. His first movie role was playing the historical figure Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the Marathi film 22 June 1897.

He won many awards for his work in theatre and films. His first Hindi film was Govind Nihalani's Ardh Satya (1983), for which he won a Filmfare Award. He acted in more than 300 movies in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Oriya, Haryanvi, Telugu, and Tamil languages. In 1993, he won the Filmfare award for Best Actor in a villainous role. This was the first time this specific award was given out.

In 1981–82, Amrapurkar acted in a Marathi play called Hands-Up!. The play was a big success, and a director named Govind Nihalani noticed him. Nihalani was looking for an actor to play the main villain in his movie Ardh Satya. The movie became a hit, and Amrapurkar's acting was highly praised. People found his way of delivering dialogues very unique compared to other movie villains at that time.

After Ardh Satya, Amrapurkar appeared in many films. In 1986, he played the villain in Aakhree Raasta, which starred Amitabh Bachchan. In 1987, he was the main villain in Hukumat, a blockbuster film. From 1988 onwards, he often played villain roles in movies like Mohre and Khatron Ke Khiladi.

In the mid-1990s, he started taking on supporting and funny roles. Some of these films include Aankhen, Ishq, and Coolie No. 1. He also played Dr. Khanna in the 1996 film Chhote Sarkar. He did many great roles in Marathi films too, such as Kadachit and Vaastupurush. His last Hindi movie role was a small appearance in Bombay Talkies (2012).

He also had a special appearance in the 1991 film Swayam. In this movie, he played a strict police officer who taught his children a lesson about caring for elderly people. This topic was very important to Amrapurkar, and he did the role for free.

Helping Others

Sadashiv Amrapurkar was a kind person who cared deeply about society. He was a philanthropist, meaning he helped people, and a social activist, working for good causes. He was involved with many social organizations, including:
