Derek W. Murphy, known as Sadat X, is an American rapper. He was born on December 29, 1968. He is famous for being part of the hip hop group Brand Nubian. His stage name, Sadat X, comes from Anwar Sadat, a former president of Egypt.

Early Life and Music Beginnings
Growing Up in New York City
Sadat X was born in the Bronx, New York City. He grew up with his childhood friend, DJ Alamo. Their families knew each other from Harlem, New York City.
Moving to New Rochelle and Forming Brand Nubian
When Sadat X was 11, his family moved to New Rochelle, New York. There, he met his future bandmates, Grand Puba and Lord Jamar. He started rapping after his father gave him a turntable for DJing. He was known as "DJ D-Rock" and "Kid Paradise" back then. Sadat's father had a large collection of music. This collection helped the group create their unique sound.
Music Career Highlights
Starting with Brand Nubian
Sadat X began his music career with Brand Nubian in 1989. Their first single was "Brand Nubian" b/w "Feels So Good." The group's first album, One For All, came out on December 4, 1990. It included popular songs like "All For One" and "Wake Up."
Solo Work and Collaborations
After releasing two more albums with Brand Nubian, In God We Trust (1993) and Everything Is Everything (1994), the group members worked on other projects for a while. Sadat X made guest appearances on many albums. He even appeared on a song called "Come On" by The Notorious B.I.G..
In 1996, Sadat X contributed to a special CD called America Is Dying Slowly. This album aimed to raise awareness about health issues among African American men. Later that year, he released his first solo album, Wild Cowboys. Many talented producers worked on this album, including Pete Rock and Diamond D.
Brand Nubian Reunions and More Albums
Sadat X and Brand Nubian got back together in 1997. In 1998, they released their fourth album, Foundation. Sadat X continued to release solo albums over the years. His third album, Black October, came out in 2006. In 2010, he released Wild Cowboys II, a follow-up to his first solo album. This album featured other artists like Ill Bill and Kurupt. In 2015, Sadat X was in a documentary film called Afraid of Dark. His 12th studio album, Science of Life, was released in 2022.
Other Projects
True Wine Connoisseurs
In 2009, Sadat X and music producer Will Tell started a web series called True Wine Connoisseurs. It's a show about wine tasting with a hip hop twist. The series is available on YouTube.
Personal Life and Community Work
Sadat X is very involved in helping children. He has worked as an elementary school teacher in New Rochelle, New York. He is also a qualified firefighter. He coaches children's basketball for the New York City Basketball League. He used to play point guard for the Howard University basketball team. Sadat X has a daughter.
