Brachypeza, also known as sage orchids, is a group of flowering plants. They belong to the amazing orchid family, called Orchidaceae. Think of a genus like a small group of very similar plants within a larger family.
These special orchids have short stems and thick, fleshy leaves. Their flowering stems arch gracefully, holding flowers that don't last very long. The parts of the flower that look like petals, called sepals and petals, are usually about the same size and shape. A unique part of the flower, the labellum, looks like a small pouch and hangs at the bottom. You can find sage orchids growing in warm, wet tropical places, all the way from Indochina to New Guinea.
Understanding Sage Orchids: Taxonomy
The group of plants known as Brachypeza was officially named and described in 1972. This important work was done by a scientist named Leslie Andrew Garay. He published his findings in a scientific paper called Botanical Museum Leaflets from Harvard University. This is how new plant groups get their official names and become known to the world!
