Saglaarjuk (which is ᓴᒡᓛᕐᔪᒃ in Inuktitut syllabics) is an island in the far north of Canada. It used to be called Amherst Island. This island is one of many islands that are not lived on by people. It is found in the Arctic part of Nunavut, Canada's largest and most northern territory.
About Saglaarjuk Island
Saglaarjuk is an island with an unusual shape. It is located in the Arctic Archipelago, which is a huge group of islands in the Arctic Ocean. The island is on the south side of a body of water called the Fury and Hecla Strait.
Where is Saglaarjuk?
This island is in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut. To the west of Saglaarjuk is another island called Saglirjuaq. South of Saglaarjuk, you will find Grinnell Lake on the mainland's Melville Peninsula. To the north, across the water, is the very large Baffin Island.
A Bit of History
Saglaarjuk was once named Amherst Island. It was named after a man called Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst. He was an officer in the British Army. He led his forces to capture important cities like Louisburg, Quebec, and Montreal from the French. Later, he became a Governor General of the Province of Quebec.
The island was part of the British Arctic Territories. These lands were controlled by the British until 1880. In that year, they were given to Canada.
