Saglirjuaq (which means ᓴᒡᓕᕐᔪᐊᖅ in Inuktitut syllabics) is an island in the far north of Canada. It used to be called Liddon Island. This island is one of many islands found in the Fury and Hecla Strait. This strait is a narrow waterway in Nunavut's Qikiqtaaluk Region. Saglirjuaq is part of the northern Canadian Arctic, a very cold and icy part of the world.

The History of Saglirjuaq's Name
Saglirjuaq was once known by a different name: Liddon Island. This name was given to honor Lieutenant Matthew Liddon. He was an officer who sailed with a famous explorer named Sir William Edward Parry.
Exploring the Northwest Passage
Sir William Edward Parry was searching for the Northwest Passage. This was a sea route through the Arctic that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Lieutenant Liddon was with Parry on this important journey. Their voyage took place between 1819 and 1820.

During their exploration, Parry and Liddon made some interesting discoveries on the island. They found different types of rocks and minerals. These included rock crystal, which is a clear mineral. They also found common iron glance and red iron ore. These are all types of minerals that contain iron.
