Sahra Wagenknecht (born Sarah Wagenknecht; 16 July 1969) is a German politician, economist, and author. Since 2009, she has been a member of the Bundestag, which is like Germany's main parliament. Until 2023, she was part of a political group called The Left.
From 2015 to 2019, Sahra Wagenknecht helped lead her party in the Bundestag. In October 2023, she left The Left party. She then started her own political party in 2024, called Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht. This new party will take part in future elections.
Wagenknecht became a well-known member of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) in the early 1990s. After The Left party was formed, she became a key member of one of its more left-leaning groups. She has often been a topic of discussion because of her strong views on certain topics.

Early Life and Education
Sahra Wagenknecht was born on 16 July 1969, in Jena, a city in East Germany. Her father was from Iran, and her mother was German. Her father disappeared in Iran when she was young.
She was mostly raised by her grandparents until 1976. Then, she and her mother moved to East Berlin. While living in Berlin, she joined a youth organization called the Free German Youth (FDJ). In 1988, she finished her high school exams, known as the Abitur in Germany. In early 1989, she joined the ruling political party at the time, the Socialist Unity Party (SED).
University Studies
Starting in 1990, Wagenknecht studied philosophy and German literature at universities in Jena and Berlin. She later studied philosophy at the University of Groningen and earned a master's degree (MA) in 1996. Her master's paper was about the ideas of Karl Marx.
From 2005 to 2012, she worked on her PhD, which is a higher university degree, at TU Chemnitz. Her research was about how people make saving decisions and meet basic needs in wealthy countries. She earned her PhD with high honors.
Political Career and Views
Sahra Wagenknecht has been a member of the German parliament, the Bundestag, since 2009. She is known for her strong opinions and for starting new political movements.
Forming a New Party
For several years, Sahra Wagenknecht thought about starting her own political party. This was because of ongoing disagreements within The Left party. In September 2023, she officially formed a new political group. This group became the basis for her new party, BSW – Reason and Justice, which was founded in 2024.
