About Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay

Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay is part of the Ardèche département, which is like a county in France. It is situated in a beautiful region with natural water sources. The village is known for its peaceful environment and its past as an important industrial center.

History of the Village

People first settled in the area of Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay way back in the year 972. Two rivers, the Deûme and the Cance, flow through the village. These rivers join together near the town of Annonay. The water from these rivers comes from rocky, granite areas, making it very clean and pure.

For many centuries, the pure water from these rivers was very important. It was especially useful for paper mills. These mills needed a lot of clean water to make paper.

The Paper Industry

In the 18th century, the paper mills in Annonay were very famous. One of the most well-known companies was Montgolfier-Canson. This company was formed from two main paper-making groups: Vidalon and Faya.

In 1805, a man named Jean-Baptiste de Montgolfier decided to open a new paper factory in Saint-Marcel. This factory was a big deal for the village. Paper production quickly became the main industry in Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay. It provided many jobs and was central to the village's economy for a long time. The people who worked in these paper mills were called les usines, which means "the factories" in French. They were a very important part of the village's culture and daily life.

Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay Today

Over time, Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay changed. What was once a busy industrial village is now mostly a residential area. People live here and enjoy the quiet surroundings. You can see a mix of old, charming buildings and newer, modern homes throughout the commune.
