Annonay is a lively town in the northern part of the Ardèche département (like a county) in France. It's the biggest town in Ardèche by population, even though the main government office (called the préfecture) is in the smaller town of Privas.

Where is Annonay?
Annonay is located just a few kilometers from the famous Rhône River. It's about 75 kilometers (47 miles) south of the big city of Lyon. Another important city, Saint-Étienne, is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) away.

The First Hot Air Balloon Flight
Annonay is famous for a very important event in history. On June 4, 1783, two brothers named Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier made history here. They launched their very first public hot air balloon flight! This amazing event showed the world that humans could fly. It was a huge step forward for aviation.
