Saint Canna was a special woman from the 6th century. She was a mother to several saints and later became a nun in southern Wales.

Who Was Saint Canna?

Canna was believed to be the daughter of a Breton King named Tudur Mawr. She was also thought to be related to another important saint, Saint Illtud.

Her Family Life

Canna married her cousin, Sadwrn. When Sadwrn was older, he traveled with Saint Cadfan to Britain. There, Sadwrn started two churches. One was in Anglesey and the other in Carmarthenshire.

Canna went with her husband and their son, Crallo. After Sadwrn passed away, Canna married again. She then became the mother of another saint, Saint Elian Geimiad.

Canna's Churches and Legacy

Canna founded a church in West Wales. After this, she became a nun. She is said to have started a church in Llangan in the Vale of Glamorgan. Today, there is still a church there named after her. It was built on the site of older churches.

Near the church, there is an old stone cross. It is called a disc-headed cross slab. This cross is about 1.3 meters tall and shows the Crucifixion.

Canna's Holy Well

Below the old church, there was a well called Ffynnon Ganna. This means "Canna's Holy Well." People believed the water from this well could heal them. Many people visited it for hundreds of years.

Canna's Name in Places

Canna's name is still used in two areas of Cardiff. These are Canton and Pontcanna. Canton is the English name for Treganna, which means "Saint Canna's Town" in Welsh. Pontcanna means "Canna's Bridge" in Welsh. There is also a street called St. Canna's Close in Canton.

Remembering Saint Canna

Saint Canna's special day is celebrated on October 25th each year.

Her Son, Saint Crallo

St Crallo's Church is named after Canna's son, Saint Crallo. He was also a Celtic saint from the 6th century. His feast day is August 8th. The village where his church is located is called Coychurch. In the Welsh language, it is known as Llangrallo. Llan means "Church" and Grallo is Crallo's name. So, Llangrallo means "the church of Crallo." It is thought that Saint Crallo built a church on this spot before the current building was made.
