St Wenna's Church, Morval, Cornwall

Wenna (born around 463 AD – died around October 18th, year unknown) was a special person from Cornwall who is honored as a saint. Many churches are named after her. People in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Roman Catholic Church, and Anglican Communion respect her. Her special day, called a feast day, is October 18th.

Wenna helped start churches in places like Talgarth, Wales, and St Wenn, Cornwall. She also helped set up smaller places of worship, called chapels, in St Kew, Cornwall, and Cheristow, near Stoke-by-Hartland, Devon.

Who Was Saint Wenna?

Wenna is believed to have been the daughter of Brychan. He was a king from old stories who ruled a place called Brycheiniog in South Wales. Her very first church was built in Talgarth, which was close to where she lived.

Wenna, along with her brother Nectan, and possibly other family members, traveled to Cornwall. They went there to share their Christian faith. In Cornwall, she helped create the church in St Wenn (which is near Bodmin). She also helped build chapels in St Kew and Cheristow, near Hartland.

It is believed that Wenna died on October 18th in an unknown year. She is thought to have been killed in Talgarth by people who did not share her beliefs.

It's important not to confuse her with her niece. Her niece was also named Wenna (sometimes called Gwen ferch Cynyr), and she was a queen in the 500s.
