Salín is a tall mountain located right on the border between Argentina and Chile. It stands at an impressive 6,029 metres (19,780 ft) above sea level. This makes it one of the highest peaks in the region.
The mountain is part of the famous Andes mountain range. Specifically, it is found in the Argentine Andes, Chilean Andes, and the Puna de Atacama areas. A part of Salín is protected as a Provincial Fauna Reserve in Argentina. This helps keep its wildlife safe.
Salín touches three different provinces. These are Salta in Argentina, and El Loa and Antofagasta in Chile. Its slopes are also near three cities: Tolar Grande in Argentina, and San Pedro de Atacama and Antofagasta in Chile.
How Tall is Salín?
Salín is officially measured at 6,029 meters (about 19,780 feet) high. Different ways of measuring mountains can give slightly different numbers. For example, some digital maps show its height as 6,024 meters or even 6,066 meters.
The mountain's "parent peak" is Pular. This means Pular is a taller mountain nearby that Salín is connected to. Salín is also considered an "Ultra prominent peak." This means it rises very high above the land around it.
Who Climbed Salín First?
The first recorded climb of Salín happened on October 5, 1960. Two climbers from Argentina, Sergio Bossini and Carlos Mas, were the first to reach its top. It is also believed that people climbed it even before this, a very long time ago.
