History of Salem

Salem has a bit of history! One important place here is the Gilboa Methodist Church. This church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's a special building that is protected because of its history.

Salem is located right in the middle of Burke County. It shares a border with the city of Morganton to the north. Morganton is the main city in Burke County.

The main road that goes through Salem is U.S. Route 64. This road is also known as Burkemont Avenue. If you go north on US-64, you will reach Morganton. If you travel southwest, you will go about 29 miles (47 km) to Rutherfordton.
