Salinas barrio-pueblo is a special area in Salinas, Puerto Rico. It's like the main town center or heart of the municipality of Salinas. In 2010, about 2,453 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, it's common for a town to have a central area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, important government buildings like the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special celebrations called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in this central square.

The Heart of Town: Plaza and Church
The main square, or plaza, is a very important place in Salinas barrio-pueblo. It's where people gather for fun events and to meet up with friends and family. People can hang out there from morning until night.
Designing the Town Square
Long ago, in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said that the main square should be big enough for celebrations. They also said that streets near the plaza should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
The Monserrate Church
Right across from the main plaza in Salinas barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate. This is a Roman Catholic church. It was built between 1911 and 1913. Before that, there was a chapel in the pueblo as early as 1690. Another church was built there between 1846 and 1853.
A Look at History
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened in 1898, following a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Population Changes Over Time
In 1899, the United States government took a census (a count of the people) in Puerto Rico. At that time, the population of Pueblo barrio was 1,192 people. The population has changed quite a bit over the years, as you can see in the chart below.
