Sara Jane "Sally" Rowley (born October 20, 1931 – died May 14, 2020) was an American artist who made jewelry. She was also an important activist for civil rights in the United States.
Early Life and Learning
Sally Rowley was born in Trenton, New Jersey. Her parents were Emos and Sara Rowley. She went to Stephens College in Missouri.
While at college, Sally learned how to fly small airplanes. After she graduated, she worked as a flight attendant for American Airlines.
Fighting for Civil Rights
In the 1950s and early 1960s, Sally worked as a secretary in New York. She became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. This movement worked to end unfair treatment and segregation against African Americans.
In 1961, Sally joined a group called the Freedom Riders. These brave people rode buses across the southern United States. They wanted to show that public buses were still segregated, even though the Supreme Court had said it was against the law. Segregation meant that Black and white people were kept separate in public places.
Sally Rowley and other Freedom Riders were arrested in Jackson County, Mississippi, in July 1961. They were trying to challenge the unfair laws. After some time, she returned to New York. Later, she lived in different places like Mexico, Guatemala, Hawaii, California, and New Mexico. She continued to make and sell her jewelry.
Family and Later Life
Sally Rowley had a partner named Felix Pasilis, who was an artist. They lived and worked together for many years until he passed away in 2018.
They had two children, Sofie and Oliver. Sally also helped raise Felix's daughter, Beatrice.
Sally Rowley died in May 2020, when she was 88 years old. She passed away from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Arizona. Her granddaughter, Anika Pasilis, wrote about her grandmother's final days.
