Saltcoats (Scottish Gaelic: Baile an t-Salainn) is a small town. You can find it on the west coast of North Ayrshire, Scotland. The town's name comes from its very first industry. People used to collect salt from the sea water of the Firth of Clyde. They did this in small houses along the shore. Saltcoats is one of the 'Three Towns'. The other two towns are Ardrossan and Stevenston. They are all very close together.

History of Saltcoats

Early Industries and Shipbuilding

In the late 1700s, Saltcoats was busy building ships. Many shipyards worked here. They made about 60 to 70 ships. A main shipbuilder was William Ritchie. But in 1790, he moved his business to Belfast. By the early 1800s, Saltcoats stopped making ships.
