Salter Point is a cool suburb in Perth, Western Australia. It is located right next to the beautiful Canning River. This area is part of the City of South Perth local government area. Salter Point is known for its interesting history and how it got its name.

History of Salter Point

Salter Point is named after Samuel August Salter. He was a sawyer, which is someone who cuts timber. Around 1880, Samuel Salter worked on this peninsula. Back then, the area was wild and undeveloped. It was surrounded by thick bush, and there were no roads.

Salter's Timber Business

Samuel Salter set up a special landing spot on the point. It was known as "Salter's Landing." This spot was used to move timber. Logs were floated down the river from places like Kelmscott and Jarrahdale. From Salter's Landing, the logs were put onto barges. These barges then took the timber to a mill. Samuel Salter ran his timber business here for several years. Because of his work, the area became known as "Salter Point."

Roads and Community Life

For a long time, there was no road to Salter Point. A road was finally built in 1929. This made it much easier to reach the area.

During the Great Depression, many people lost their homes. From about 1930 to 1933, up to 110 people lived in a camp at Salter Point. This camp was near where the Gentilli Way boat ramp is today. The local government, called the South Perth Road Board, helped the campers. They added toilets and running water after some people got sick. The residents lived in tents and small shacks. These shacks were often made from old metal drums. They relied on charity because there was not much work available.

Suburb Name and Boundaries

In 1955, the areas of Manning, Mount Henry, Salter Point, and Waterford joined the South Perth Road Board. This changed the local government boundaries. The name "Salter Point" was officially made a suburb name in 1990. This process is called "gazetting." The foreshore along the Canning River has also been studied. These studies help create plans for how to manage and protect the riverbanks.
