Waterford is a small suburb in Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. It sits right next to the Canning River. The area is managed by the City of South Perth, which is its local government.
History of Waterford
Waterford used to be part of another suburb called Karawara. In the 1980s, the area south of Manning Road was given its own name: Waterford.
The name "Waterford" comes from a place in Ireland. This is where Edmund Rice, who started the Christian Brothers group, was born. In 1901, the Christian Brothers received land here. They built the Clontarf Orphanage. This was a school and farm for boys who needed help. It was located on a large piece of land (2 square kilometers) along the Canning River.
Today, this school is known as the "Clontarf Aboriginal College." It is now run by a special Board of Management. This board works with the Catholic Archbishop of Perth. The College Principal is in charge of the daily activities, including hiring staff and enrolling students.
Starting in 1981, parts of the land were sold off. Trinity College, a school in Perth, owned this land. They divided it into smaller blocks for houses. Many streets in Waterford have Irish names, like places in Ireland. Trinity College still owns some of the land. This part has been turned into sports fields for the school's teams.
In 1984, a special house called the Perth Telethon Home was built in Waterford. It was on Cashel Way. This house was sold at an auction on TV for A$120,000. This was a new record for a Telethon Home at the time!
