Sam Allen Lindsay, born on October 16, 1951, is an American lawyer. He serves as a United States district judge in Dallas, Texas. He works for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

Early Life and Education
Sam Lindsay was born in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up in South Texas. In 1974, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s University. He studied History and Government and graduated with high honors. Later, in 1977, he received his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from the University of Texas School of Law in Austin.
Career Highlights
After finishing law school, Sam Lindsay worked for the Texas Aeronautics Commission. He was a staff attorney there from 1977 to 1979. In 1979, he joined the Dallas City Attorney's office. He held many different roles there.
He led the Federal Litigation Section from 1979 to 1986. Then, he became a Chief of litigation division from 1986 to 1990. He was also an executive assistant city attorney during that time. From 1990 to 1991, he served as a first assistant city attorney. In 1991, he was the Acting city attorney. Finally, he became the City Attorney for Dallas from 1992 to 1998.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On November 8, 1997, President Bill Clinton chose Sam Lindsay to be a United States District Judge. This was a new judge position created by a law. The United States Senate agreed to his appointment on March 11, 1998. He officially became a judge on March 17, 1998. Judge Lindsay was the first African American to serve on the federal District Court in Dallas.
Important Cases
Judge Lindsay has overseen several important cases.
- In May 2007, he issued an order about a rule in Farmers Branch, Texas. This rule would have allowed fines for property managers who rented to people who were in the country without permission. Judge Lindsay's order stopped this rule from being enforced.
- In January 2015, Judge Lindsay sentenced a journalist named Barrett Brown. This case involved computer security issues related to a company called Stratfor. The journalist had been in jail for about two and a half years before his sentencing. Judge Lindsay sentenced him to a total of 63 months in jail. He also ordered him to pay money to Stratfor and other companies affected by the computer issues.
Judge Lindsay is also a Trustee for The Center for American and International Law. This organization helps train law enforcement officers, including those from the FBI.
Personal Life
Sam Lindsay is married to Kathy Lindsay. They have a daughter named Rachel Lindsay. Rachel is also a lawyer and is known for being on TV. She first appeared on The Bachelor. In 2017, she became the main person on The Bachelorette. She was the first African-American lead in the history of that TV show.
