Samuel James Champion (born August 13, 1961) is an American weather anchor. He works for WABC-TV and Good Morning America. He used to host shows like AMHQ: America's Morning Headquarters on The Weather Channel.

After December 4, 2013, he left ABC. He then became a managing editor at The Weather Channel. Champion also appeared on the Today show on NBC. In 2016, he left NBC and The Weather Channel. He returned to ABC as a fill-in. In June 2019, he became the weekday morning weather anchor at WABC-TV again.

Early Life and School

Champion was born on August 13, 1961. His hometown is Paducah, Kentucky. His parents were Sylvia and James H. Champion. He has one sister named Teresa. His father was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam.

Sam graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia in 1979. He earned a degree in broadcast news. This was from Eastern Kentucky University. He also worked as an intern at WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.

Career in Television

Champion started his career at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky. He also worked at WJKS in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1988, he became a weather presenter. He joined WABC-TV's Eyewitness News in New York City.

He later moved to Good Morning America. On April 7, 2012, he began hosting Sea Rescue. This show teaches about rescuing animals. It focuses on helping animals return to the wild.

In August 2006, Good Morning America announced Champion would join them. He officially started on September 5, 2006. On December 2, 2013, Champion said he would leave ABC. He was going to The Weather Channel. His last day on Good Morning America was December 4, 2013. Ginger Zee took his place.

He sometimes appeared on Live with Kelly and Ryan. This is a talk show from WABC-TV. He also appeared on CNN's Larry King Live. He often starts his weather reports by saying, "Let's get to the boards."

After leaving Good Morning America, Champion joined The Weather Channel. He hosted his own morning show there. It was called America's Morning Headquarters. The show started on March 17, 2014. In September 2015, Champion changed roles. He became a contributor to other shows. In December 2016, he left The Weather Channel. His last day was December 27, 2016.

He returned to ABC as a fill-in weather forecaster. He helped on Good Morning America when Ginger Zee was on maternity leave. On May 22, 2019, it was announced he would return to WABC-TV. He started on June 3, 2019. He now works on morning and noon newscasts. He also helps ABC News.

On September 8, 2022, Champion joined Dancing with the Stars. He was a contestant on season 31. His dance partner was Cheryl Burke.

Personal Life

Champion helps many charities in the New York metropolitan area. He was a leader for the Multiple Sclerosis Society bike tour. He also chaired the March of Dimes NYC WalkAmerica. He hosted "Stopping AIDS Together." He also hosted the New York City Anti-Violence Project's "Courage Awards" in 2002.

In May 2010, Champion had a type of skin cancer removed. This happened while he was on air. He wanted to help people learn about skin cancer. He did this during Cancer Awareness Month.

Champion and his partner, Rubem Robierb, got married. Their wedding was on December 21, 2012.
