Samuel Frost, born on August 28, 1993, is a professional Australian rules football player. He plays for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Sam is a versatile player, meaning he can play in different positions. He is about 1.95 metres (6 ft 5 in) tall and weighs 94 kilograms (207 lb). He can play as a forward (attacking player), a defender (defensive player), or even in the ruck (a player who contests the ball at stoppages).

Sam started playing top-level football early. He played for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup when he was younger than most players. In his final year as a junior, he helped Sandringham win their grand final. He also won a final with Vic Metro in the 2011 AFL Under 18 Championships. The Greater Western Sydney Giants picked him first in the 2012 rookie draft. He made his AFL debut in 2012. After three seasons and 21 games with the Giants, he moved to the Melbourne Football Club in 2014. In October 2019, he was traded to Hawthorn.

Sam Frost's Early Life and Junior Career

Sam Frost was born to Wendy and David Frost. When he was younger, he played both volleyball and basketball. Later, he decided to focus on Australian rules football. In 2010, he joined the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. He was a "bottom-aged player," meaning he was younger than most players in the league. At that time, he played as a ruckman.

In 2011, Sam finished year twelve at Wesley College. He also returned to the Sandringham Dragons. This time, he moved to play in the backline (defence). He helped his team win the grand final against the Oakleigh Chargers by eight points. That same year, he played for Vic Metro in the 2011 AFL Under 18 Championships. His team won the final against Vic Country. Experts thought he would be picked among the top 30 players in the 2011 AFL draft.

Sam Frost's AFL Journey

Starting Out at Greater Western Sydney (2012–2014)

Sam Frost was not picked in the main 2011 national draft. However, the Greater Western Sydney Giants chose him as the very first pick in the 2012 rookie draft. In the first half of 2012, he played for the UWS Giants team in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL).

He made his AFL debut in round seventeen of the 2012 season. This was in a game against Fremantle at Patersons Stadium. He played two more games before he needed hip surgery. This surgery ended his season, and he finished with three AFL matches. After being on the rookie list, he was moved to the senior list at the end of 2012.

In 2013, Sam played his first AFL game of the season in round four. This was against Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He played two more AFL games that year. Most of his time in 2013 was spent playing 22 matches in the NEAFL.

Sam had a strong pre-season in 2014. Other defenders on his team were injured, which gave him a chance to play more senior games. He played in the first eight matches of the year. He then played five more games before being rested. He finished the year with 16 matches. After playing 21 games in total for Greater Western Sydney, he asked to move back to his home state of Victoria. In October, he was officially traded to the Melbourne Football Club.

Playing for Melbourne (2015–2019)

Sam Frost played his first game for Melbourne in round one of 2015. It was a win against Gold Coast at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He played the first three games of the year. However, he broke his toe in round three against Adelaide. He was expected to be out for "four to six weeks," but he did not play any more football in 2015.

At the start of the 2016 season, Sam moved to play in the forward line. He played in the first game against Greater Western Sydney, which Melbourne won. He was then rested for a game but returned for the next four matches. After that, he spent three weeks playing for Melbourne's reserve team, the Casey Scorpions, in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

When he returned to the senior team, he moved back to playing as a defender. This move was very successful for him. He played every game for the rest of the season, except for one due to illness. He finished the 2016 season with 16 matches.

In 2017, Sam had a foot injury and missed the first game. He started the season playing in the VFL. He played his first AFL game of the year in round four against Fremantle. In his third game back, he played very well against Hawthorn. He had 20 disposals (times he got the ball), seven rebound 50s (kicking the ball from defence into the forward half), and seven marks (catching the ball). His coach, Simon Goodwin, praised his performance. He played 16 games in a row, including his 50th AFL match. He signed a new two-year contract in September 2017, staying with Melbourne until the end of 2019.

Joining Hawthorn (2020–Present)

Sam Frost was traded to Hawthorn after the 2019 AFL season. He was given guernsey number 8 for the 2020 season.

Sam quickly made a big impact at Hawthorn with his strong aerial play in defence. He missed only one game in his first year with the club. The next year, he played every single game. In 2022, he signed a contract extension for two more years. Sam has also shown he can play in different roles, sometimes playing forward or in the ruck. His experience as a defender has been very helpful in guiding the younger players in the backline. His 2022 season ended early because of a knee injury. In 2023, he dealt with some minor injuries throughout the year, and his season was cut short again. Sam triggered a contract extension during 2024, but his season ended when he got a stress fracture in his foot during the Elimination final.

Career Statistics Summary

Sam Frost has played a total of 185 AFL games and scored 9 goals throughout his career up to round 1, 2025.
