Sam is a versatile player, meaning he can play in many different positions. He is 194 cm (6 ft 4 in) tall and weighs 94 kg (207 lb).
Sam can play as a forward (who tries to score goals) or a defender (who stops the other team from scoring). He can also play as a ruckman, which involves jumping to tap the ball at stoppages. He started playing top-level football at a young age for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup, a junior league. In his final year as a junior, he won the grand final with Sandringham and also won a championship with Vic Metro in the 2011 AFL Under 18 Championships. The Greater Western Sydney Giants picked him first in the 2012 rookie draft. He made his AFL debut in 2012. After three seasons with the Giants, he moved to the Melbourne Football Club in 2014. Early Life and Junior Football
Sam Frost was born on August 28, 1993, to Wendy and David Frost. When he was younger, he played both volleyball and basketball. Later, he decided to focus on Australian rules football.
In 2010, Sam joined the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. He was a "bottom-aged player," meaning he was younger than most players in the league. He played as a ruckman then. In 2011, he finished year twelve at Wesley College. He continued to play for the Sandringham Dragons. That year, he moved to play in the backline (defence). He helped his team win the grand final against the Oakleigh Chargers. Sam also played for Vic Metro in the 2011 AFL Under 18 Championships, where his team won the final against Vic Country.
AFL Career Journey
Starting with Greater Western Sydney (2012–2014)
Even though Sam wasn't picked in the main 2011 AFL draft, the Greater Western Sydney Giants chose him first in the 2012 rookie draft. He spent the first part of 2012 playing in a different league called the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL).
Sam made his first AFL appearance in round seventeen of the 2012 season. He played against Fremantle at Patersons Stadium. He played two more games before needing hip surgery, which ended his season. After being on the rookie list, he was moved to the main senior list at the end of 2012.
In 2013, Sam played his first AFL game of the season in round four against Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He played two more AFL games that year. For most of 2013, he played 22 games in the NEAFL.
In 2014, Sam had a strong pre-season. Because some other defenders were injured, he got to play more games for the senior team. He played in the first eight games of the year. He played a total of sixteen games that season. After playing 21 games for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, he asked to be traded back to his home state of Victoria. In October, he officially moved to the Melbourne Football Club.
Playing for Melbourne (2015–2019)
Sam played his first game for Melbourne in round one of 2015 against Gold Coast. He played three games before breaking his toe in round three. This injury meant he couldn't play for the rest of 2015.
At the start of the 2016 season, Sam moved to play in the forward line. He played in the first game against Greater Western Sydney. He was later moved back to play as a defender. This move was very successful for him. He played almost every game for the rest of the season, finishing with sixteen games in total.
In 2017, Sam had a foot injury and missed the first game. He played his first AFL game of the year in round four against Fremantle. In a game against Hawthorn in round seven, he played very well. His coach, Simon Goodwin, praised his performance. He played sixteen games in a row, including his fiftieth AFL match. He signed a new contract to stay with Melbourne until the end of the 2019 season.
Joining Hawthorn (2020–Present)
After the 2019 AFL season, Sam Frost was traded to Hawthorn. He was given the number 8 guernsey for the 2020 season.
Sam quickly made a big impact at Hawthorn with his strong aerial skills in defence. He only missed one game in his first year and played every game the next year. In 2022, he signed a contract extension for two more years. Sam has also shown he can play in different positions, sometimes moving to the forward line or even the ruck. His experience as a defender has been very helpful in guiding the younger players in the backline. His 2022 season ended early due to a knee injury. In 2023, he dealt with some minor injuries. His season was cut short again. In 2024, he played well enough to extend his contract, but a foot injury in the Elimination final ended his season.
